The Oxygen Phangan Open brought Thai Padel Series competition to Koh Phangan from 20 to 22 September 2024. The organiser’s recap reported 47 pairs, giving the island a documented domestic-circuit event well before its later FIP Bronze tournaments in 2026.
That earlier weekend is a useful part of Phangan’s sporting history. International competition did not create the island’s first recorded connection with tournament padel; local venue activity and a domestic circuit occasion were already present in the calendar.
Forty-seven pairs, many separate matches
The reported 47-pair figure describes the organiser’s account of the event’s entries. It should not automatically be converted into unique individuals or spectators, particularly when players may appear in more than one category. Its useful role is to give scale to this particular tournament.
For each partnership, the event was more immediate than the total. The draw supplied opponents and a path through the competition, turning a trip or a local appearance into a series of matches with a defined outcome.
An island event can bring regular residents and visiting players into the same field. Their normal playing circles may be different, which makes the first exchanges a process of discovery. One pair has to learn the other quickly enough to decide where it can create pressure.
That is a useful test for locally established combinations. A partnership comfortable against familiar opponents may need a different answer to repeated lobs, patient defence or aggressive returns. The tournament makes those variations part of the competitive experience.
Padel before the international dates
Phangan’s later FIP events attracted attention through an international calendar and visiting professional partnerships. The Oxygen Open shows another layer of the island’s competition record, with a Thai Padel Series event taking place two years earlier.
The chronology does not establish that one organiser or tournament directly caused another. It shows that the destination had an existing padel context in which later events could appear. Each competition still needs to be understood through its own venue, field and rules.
For players, those layers can serve different purposes. Domestic-category competition offers one kind of target, while a FIP draw has its own entry conditions and standard. An athlete may follow both without treating them as one automatic progression route.
The earlier event also gives local followers something specific to remember. It has dates, a name and an organiser-reported pair total, making it possible to place it within the island’s history rather than describe all earlier activity as an indistinct beginning.
An audience beyond the courts
The recap claimed more than 1,000 livestream viewers. That figure belongs to the organiser’s account and does not establish the number of people physically present at the venue. Online viewers, cumulative views and simultaneous audiences are different measures, so the stated streaming figure should retain its original attribution.
The broader sporting idea is that matches can connect people beyond the players on court. Friends, regular opponents and followers elsewhere may have an interest in a category result or a familiar partnership, even when they cannot attend the event.
For competitors, that attention remains secondary to the work of the match. Communication, judgement and the ability to recover after a difficult game determine the result more directly than the size of the audience following it.
The Oxygen Phangan Open’s place in 2024 is therefore grounded in the competition it offered. A reported 47 pairs came into a Thai Padel Series weekend on the island, creating encounters beyond normal club games and adding a dated event to Phangan’s padel record. Later international tournaments gave the destination new chapters, but this earlier domestic occasion remains part of the story of the players who were already competing there and building their own experience through organised matches.
